Mac Spotlight isn't finding files in my Sookasa folder. What should I do?

With Mac Version 3.2.9 and above, you can also search files through Finder by typing the name of the file in the search box and then selecting "Sookasa" as the search location, as marked in the screenshot below.

When you search for a file in Sookasa by typing into the search bar in Mac Finder, the default is to search the entire machine for this file. To change the Finder preferences so that your machine only searches within the Sookasa folder:

  1. Open Finder and select Finder on the Menu Bar
  2. Select Preferences > Advanced
  3. Change to "Search the Current Folder" when performing a search

Getting Spotlight to work is absolutely critical. Given the volume of files we have, using Finder is extremely painful to the point of basically being unusable. It's way too slow since it's not indexed.

Hi Joshua, thanks for the feedback. We recognize that spotlight search is extremely important for many of our users, and that the workaround suggested here is less than ideal. Getting spotlight to work is a significant technical challenge, and we are actively exploring ways to do it.

Thanks for the quick response. Obviously not for the non-technical, but do you know if it will work if I manually tell Spotlight to index the mounted Sookasa drive, a la http://jonathansblog.co.uk/how-to-enable-spotlight-indexing-on-a-network-drive

Hi Joshua, to the best of our knowledge, this does not solve the problem. We will try this again in our labs to confirm. If you happen to experiment with it, we'd love to learn about your findings!

Any update to this issue? Is it on the roadmap yet?

    Hi Joshua,

Yes, this is definitely on our roadmap. We are actively exploring ways to provide a fully seamless solution. Have you tried changing the Finder preferences as we suggested above? This would make access to Sookasa file search much easier.

Yes, I made that change. It's just that I have SO many files that it takes forever for finder to return results whereas Spotlight is very fast.

I second Joshua's request. We have a very large volume of files on our Sookasa volume and need to use Spotlight (not Finder Find) to rapidly navigate to them.

Any effort to make Sookasa work with Spotlight would be most appreciated.

    Hi James,

Thanks for the feedback. We're continuing to research this issue to identify a fix.

I would also like to share my support for this. This is a critical feature for those of us with incredible amounts of data.

This is really important to me too. I moved all my work files to Sookasa, 26GB worth, thinking that I would still have this functionality.

Yeah ... any update on this? It's been an open item for almost a year.

We have 150GB of files on Sookasa and are still manually searching for our files. The workaround (Quicksilver) isn't very good, as the files that are added continuously do not get indexed immediately. Thus, we're first trying Quicksilver, usually failing to bring up the right file on searching, then opening and manually scrolling through folders to find our files. We likely will drop our Sookasa service later this year if a fix to allow Spotlight searches isn't found, since the increased volume of our files is making it progressively more difficult to find what we need. It's simply not worth the other benefits that we're paying for.

Wow, I wish I'd known this before I purchased a large Dropbox account. Seems like sookasa should let people know this type of major limitation before people invest time and money. We spent hours and days uploading a massive amount of files up into Dropbox, slowing down our bandwidth, to now find out search isn't an option?

Can you at least find the files via the dropbox website search of your files?

Thanks for the follow-up, and sorry about this. We are working on supporting Spotlight and will post an update here when we release a version with it. We have made progress, but need to resolve a few more technical hurdles before it is ready for release.

Ryan, to answer your specific question on search capabilities on Dropbox web, you can search for a file by its file name on the Dropbox website's search bar or on the Browse tab of your Sookasa Dashboard once you navigate to the folder that contains the file.

Thanks for the follow up Celia. I've also been contacted by one of your colleagues, and I really appreciate the customer support I've received today! Looking forward to this being updated and resolved, though I can see that Apple continues to tinker with Spotlight.

    Hi Ryan and Russ,

I really appreciate the insight into how important this is for your use of Sookasa, and I've passed this feedback on to our Mac engineering team, which is continuing to evaluate viable solutions for this tricky problem.

    Best,
    Celia
